Consolidated Car Rental Facility

Client: Houston Airport System (HAS) - IAH

Location: Houston, Texas

Serving nearly 40 million passengers annually, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston continues to be one of the busiest airports in the world. In order to provide its growing number of travelers with increased convenience, the Houston Airport System elected to develop an on-site, consolidated car rental facility with common bus transportation. OTHON provided construction and program management for the project, which began with clearing 234 acres for the facility footprint. A total of 1.5 million sf of floor space was utilized for the main facility featuring an 80,000-sf customer service building and a two-level, 4,648-space parking garage. A 15,000-sf bus maintenance facility was constructed in the rear of the property, which includes an automatic bus wash, fueling depot, and service bays.

OTHON's Scope

  • Providing full-time resident managers and inspectors to coordinate two construction packages for the basic facilities and site
  • One contract encompassed all site infrastructure, including utilities and paving, as well as a flyover bridge over JFK Boulevard to connect the facility to the airport’s main roadway.  The other contract involved construction of all facilities, including the bus maintenance facility, rental car center, and garage. Once the basic infrastructure and facilities were in place, OTHON continued its role as the Owner’s Representative coordinating and overseeing nine additional construction packages for tenant and site improvements by the individual rental companies.
